Earn a Little More · a practical fieldbook

Teach or sell a skill responsibly

Make the learning outcome narrow and honest.

Choose an appropriate level

Teach a task you can explain and demonstrate accurately. A beginner lesson on spreadsheet organization is different from regulated financial advice. Avoid offering medical, legal or other licensed services without the required authorization. Be explicit about your experience and limits.

Build a lesson or deliverable

Write the starting knowledge, materials and outcome. Make an example, practice activity and take-away sheet. For tutoring, agree what support you can provide without completing assessed work dishonestly. For work with children, check safeguarding, background check and guardian-consent requirements.

Test understanding

Ask the learner to perform the task, not simply whether the explanation made sense. Note where they get stuck and simplify the instructions. Get permission before recording or sharing a session. Store only what is needed and avoid collecting sensitive learner information.

Charge for a defined service

Explain session length, cancellation rules and any preparation costs before payment. Avoid guarantees about grades, jobs or earnings. Keep records of preparation and follow-up time. Use the true-earnings tool to see whether your service remains sustainable after costs.

Your working checklist

  • Describe what the learner will be able to do and the knowledge they need beforehand.
  • Prepare a short practice task and a way to check understanding.
  • Agree cancellation, recording and materials rules before the session.

What if someone asks for advice outside my competence?

Say clearly that the request is outside the service you offer and refer them to appropriate qualified help. Do not disguise a regulated or safety-critical service as informal teaching. A disclaimer does not replace necessary training, licensing or professional responsibility.
